Astronaut Shares Depression Following ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her emotional downturn after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
The 34-year-old activist – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a public message, recalling a phone call from a mission companion in the days following the journey.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Buried Under Misogyny
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of gendered attacks.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, including spotlight on her women's health research and new advocacy opportunities.
Flight Details
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that exceeded the Kármán line of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
