Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master the talented storyteller has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, fiends, and dark forces increasing in influence within the urban setting.

Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.

The Warrior Group Revealed

The latest chapter concluded with a dramatic pause and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will separate from the main group to embark on their independent quest, apart from the remaining groups.

The Soldiers table includes Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander (Sam), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).

Dividing the Cast

With a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be impossible.

This explains, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Prelude, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three distinct groups: Soldiers, Strategists, and Explorers.

Characteristics of the Combat Party

According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the combat-focused party is for players who are drawn to a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the squeamish cleric Wicander Halovar might seem unsuited, but the developments of the latest installment make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

For one thing, the party knows exactly where to head next after a brutal first encounter with the enemy group.

A former ally of Thjazi Fang—whose death initiated the narrative’s action—exploited the foes for his selfish purposes, invading Thjazi’s hideout, attacking the character, and taking all the magical artifacts to auction.

The traitor then cleared his debts and fled to a secure base in the northern region, north of the city, with Teor’s brother hot on his heels.

Personal Motivations

Moreover, each adventurer has a specific drive to depart the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and closest confidant, desires retribution.
  • The adventurer is familiar with the northern area and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and The healer, having defied his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead rescued him, have nowhere else to go.
  • Yet, their status as key figures in the powerful family could help the party reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his rescue and will now accompany him everywhere.

Wanted and Hunted

Lastly, all of them are hunted by the authorities that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making lingering locally dangerous:

  • Thimble and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The healer betrayed the influential house and the army of fiends they are aligned with.
  • The target is wanted dead by the clan.

This leaves them few options but to travel to the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

According to the latest episode’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table won’t be around next week, leaving the other eight participants to assemble the Questers and Planners groups.

Fans can look forward to finding out which adventurers will be in which group in the story’s last Overture episode, available to watch on next week.
