Individuals Stopping Slimming Medications Put On Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users buying these treatments must be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have come off the medication explain a intense return of cravings.

"It was like something activating and you become extremely hungry," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle support.
