The artist gives twenty-five thousand pounds Mercury Prize to grassroots concert halls

Sam Fender won the prestigious award in October in his hometown

Sam Fender has handed over the entirety of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which operates to preserve the UK's independent music venues.

The star was given the cheque on mid-October as his third album the album was chosen as the outstanding release of the last 12 months.

Fender has opted to give the cash to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"As an artist would not have achieved this success if it wasn't for all the performances I did around the area, and beyond, when I was beginning," stated the artist. "These spaces are legendary, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these venues have shut down – roughly 16 percent of the entire UK sector.

In the last year, major artists like the band Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to help venues survive, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which supports smaller concert halls.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising more than £100,000 on his recent tour to support thirty-eight small stages across Britain.

The money assisted venues that were facing possible closure due to difficulties caused by flooding, blazes and bereavements, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received funding support in upgrading facilities and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and concertgoers.

"The idea that revenue from shows in large arenas helps the independent spots, where it all starts for musicians like me, is just common sense," Sam Fender has said.

The musician is among several artists to donate his award funds to good deeds.

Back when Pulp earned the award in the mid-90s for their record their work, lead singer Cocker announced that the group would donate their cash to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, musician Ms Dynamite split her prize across several charities, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"Additionally, I gave a thousand pounds to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they required new equipment," the artist shared with the media.

In recent years, the band contributed their winnings to the local youth club that developed their band, in addition to other local music groups.

And winners that year they contributed their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a friend was identified with the disease.

"The victory was sufficient," said vocalist the singer. "The cash was the extra but we didn't require the bonus, because we had the main prize. So our success impacted the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had saved a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in the city and the other in the city were acquired under the public acquisition program, which is funded by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who acquire "stakes" in the properties.
