The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was convicted of orchestrating a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Alexandre de Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.
This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who works as a senator, called for a gathering of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.
His son wrote on digital networks on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your nation, or watch it all from your smartphone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to seek refuge through a consular facility", a statement said.
The legal document highlights that the American diplomatic mission in the federal district, the capital city, is situated around 13km from Bolsonaro's home.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have drawn the ire of fellow right-wing populist American leader President Trump, leading him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
He is being detained in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will have a detention review on Sunday.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also requested that he be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Background on Conviction
The former president was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the presidential race to his political opponent, President Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he knew of a plot which encompassed plans to assassinate the current president and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing the former president's case.
The scheme was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - eight years later after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The ex-leader called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the next presidential race.
